The NDS is happy to announce that Fabian Klebert, Technical Coordinator at NDS Association, has been confirmed as a speaker at another major event shaping the future of automotive software: the 16th AUTOSAR Open Conference (AOC) on May 27, 2025. Furthermore, he will also speak at the renowned ELIV Congress later this year.
At the AUTOSAR Open Conference, Fabian will spotlight the role of open-source software in the development and implementation of industry standards focusing specifically on the open-source tool zserio and its integration within NDS. zserio is a framework for serializing structured data with a compact and efficient way with low overhead.
Key features include:
Fabian’s presentation about “zserio, Open Source and NDS” will explore how NDS has successfully adopted the high-performance open-source framework zserio to enable efficient, scalable, and safety-relevant data serialization following key requirements in automotive-grade navigation systems. Fabian will share insights into how this collaboration with automotive manufacturers has made zserio production-ready for use in safety-critical environments, highlighting practical experiences, challenges, and success factors.
Why did NDS choose zserio?
In direct comparison, the serialization framework Protobuf offers similar advantages to zserio. So why did NDS choose zserio and not Protobuf? First, when NDS.Classic was developed, there was no Open Source Protobuf available since it only started in 2008. So, it actually came too late. Back then NDS decided on DataScript and Relational DataScript (RDS). After a re-evaluation in 2018, when NDS.Live started, the choice fell on zserio. Key Performance Indicators included zserio’s features. Its code is usable in functional safe systems. In addition, aspects such as data size, encoding as well as decoding speed and user experience play an important role.
Fabian’s talk is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate how open-source software and standards can go hand in hand, supporting innovation while meeting rigorous industry demands. It also reaffirms the NDS Association’s commitment to transparency, collaboration, and the adoption of cutting-edge tools and processes in the evolving automotive software landscape.
At the ELIV Congress later this year, Fabian will extend the conversation and present a broader vision on accelerating software-defined vehicle (SDV) development through AI, open source, and agile standardization.
These engagements underscore NDS’s role in driving industry collaboration and practical innovation. By contributing to platforms like the AUTOSAR Open Conference, we continue to promote a more open, interoperable, and future-ready development ecosystem for automotive software.
