NDS is partnering with AUTOSAR to enable in-vehicle communication of map data with NDS.Live based on the AUTOSAR SOME/IP protocol standard. SOME/IP (Scalable Service-Oriented Middleware over IP) is AUTOSAR’s automotive middleware solution for control messages between devices of different sizes and with different operating systems within the vehicle, such as cameras, AUTOSAR devices or even head units.
NDS.Live is a distributed map data service. As such, it provides a standardized language for map data communication between different data providers, local map storage in the vehicle, fleet data from the manufacturer, live ECU data and other applications. This means that the interfaces of data and application services like route generation, EV range calculation or Electronic Horizon functions are defined in NDS.Live, supporting different transportation layers. NDS.Live users can decide where the NDS data or application service is deployed – be it in the cloud, the vehicle’s head unit, the automated driving unit or another location like a companion mobile app.
NDS.Live ensures interoperability at the interface level by serializing data before it is passed onto the transport layer so that it can be shared across platforms and languages. And while users have the freedom to model the transportation layer according to their preferences and needs, there are some solutions that have proven to be more popular than others. For cloud-to-vehicle communication, HTTP/REST is a commonly used option, while the widely recognized AUTOSAR SOME/IP protocol is the perfect complement for communication between different components within the vehicle. For this reason, NDS has partnered with AUTOSAR to build a reference application for NDS.Live based on AUTOSAR SOME/IP. For demonstration purposes, NDS will contribute a corresponding client application for the AUTOSAR Adaptive Platform Demonstrator.
If you want to learn more about NDS and how we plan to work with AUTOSAR, you are welcome to meet the NDS Chairman Martin Schleicher at the 14th AUTOSAR Open Conference on May 11-12. Information about the event is available here.
