The 1st NDS Public Conference, hosted by the NDS association, was attended by NDS members and non-members alike. The event’s debut on June 13th in Munich, Germany, was collocated with the 12th Open Auto Drive Forum. The 120 guests who participated in the conference confirmed that the Navigation Data Standard needs to open up more to the whole industry.
NDS Chairman Martin Schleicher from Elektrobit Automotive shared the vision and objectives of the NDS Association during his welcome speech. NDS is THE worldwide standard for map data in automotive eco-systems with now 38 members investing in future development of NDS specifications and supporting tools. Martin Schleicher announced that the NDS Association is working to usher in an evolution of NDS called NDS.Live. It caters to the transitions of navigation from pure offline to hybrid/online, enables cloud connected dynamic data, clever update mechanisms, and improved support for Automated Driving (AD). Schleicher also highlighted that the NDS Association is preparing an open source license of NDS.Live for evaluation and non-commercial use.
We want more visibility, awareness, and feedback on NDS.
The morning was filled with informative and interesting speeches. Below you can find download links to the presentations.
The event began with Felix Friedmann of AID-Autonomous
Intelligent Driving, who presented AI for Autonomous Driving. Next was SK
Telekom’s Seung-Mo Cho, who shared progress regarding the development of an HD
map for South Korea. Cho was followed by Isabel Metz of Automotive Artificial
Intelligence (AAI). Metz presented AAI’s approach to simulation and testing of
autonomous driving. After Metz came Mario Aleksic of Daimler, presenting the
OpenDRIVE format and the latest news.
Following Aleksic, Udo Steininger of TÜV SÜD briefed the audience members about
the Pegasus project objectives “How safe is safe enough?”. Steininger emphasized
Pegasus aims to deliver the standard for HAD safety by defining the methodology
and testing requirements for ensuring the safety of self-driving functions. Elektrobit’s
Roman Dolgov concluded the guest presentations by elucidating the usage of NDS
and ADASIS as a perfect bundle for automated and autonomous driving functions.
After the guest presentations, the next block was focused exclusively on NDS. Fabian Klebert, Technical Coordinator for the NDS Association, presented NDS’ latest technical advancements in NDS specification and its accompanying tools. Klebert also provided audience members status on the progress of NDS, speaking about NDS.Live and how it has contributed to NDS’ evolution. André Heinrich, Coordinator of the NDS Verification Control Board, later gave insights to the certification process for NDS products.
Following Klebert, the NDS Association Product Manager Georg Horn (Elektrobit) explained how NDS is evolving to support connected and HAD use cases with NDS.Live. Georg Horn shared the progress of the NDS Product Definition Group (PDG) and called for greater participation of NDS members in the NDS PDG.
The conference concluded with a very crowded exhibition of NDS-related systems, including vehicles using NDS systems and maps by different providers.
The event was a great success. Thanks to positive feedback, the NDS Association is looking forward to organizing a 2nd NDS Public Conference in 2020!
